There were 19.4 million divorced adults in the U.S. in 1998.
The median "life expectancy" of a marriage is 7.2
years.
The median age of men at the time of divorce is
35.6; the median age of women is 33.2.
Nevada has the highest divorce rate at 4.1 per thousand; Massachusetts
has the lowest at 2.4 per thousand.
On average, a litigated divorce costs around $15,000 and takes
more than a year to conclude. Mediation generally takes
less time and considerably less money than a litigated divorce.
In one study, more than two-thirds of mediating couples stated
they were "highly satisfied" with the process,
and 93 percent said they would recommend mediation to others.
On the other hand, only 20 percent of couples who litigated
their divorce described the outcome as "fair."
Nearly 90 percent of mediated divorce cases settle successfully.
